    A cohort study of duplex Doppler examinations of the carotid artery in primary open angle glaucoma

    Objectives To explore the possibility of pathological change in the common carotid artery at the bifurcation and in the internal carotid artery beyond the bifurcation which could contribute to a reduced diastolic pressure as observed in primary open angle glaucoma. Design Duplex ultrasonic examinations of carotid bifurcations were conducted on 80 patients. Carotid artery defects were allocated into three types: no demonstrable flow defects, internal carotid artery abnormalities and disease in the carotid bulb. Setting Bristol Royal Infirmary Vascular Laboratory. Participants Eighty patients (mean age 69.6 years) providing a total of 160 sides to the analysis. Main outcome measures An estimated central retinal artery pressure, intraocular pressure and field loss were recorded for each side measured. Results Doppler investigations revealed significant levels of pathological change in the internal carotid distinct from changes at the carotid bulb. The disease revealed in the internal carotid artery was significantly associated with intraocular pressure (p = 0.032), with an effect small to medium in magnitude. The Q2 measure, derived from mean arterial pressure and intraocular pressure, was also substantively associated with disease in the internal carotid artery. Both intraocular pressure and the Q2 measure effectively discriminated between groups, with field loss providing rather less discriminating capability. There was a strong trend towards a higher intraocular pressures and a greater visual field loss with internal carotid artery disease. Conclusions Pathological changes in the extra cranial carotid artery in primary open angle glaucoma exceed those in the arteries classified as normal. The presence of disease specifically in the internal carotid artery emphasised the need for a mechanism for the evaluation of the internal carotid apart from the carotid bulb. A basis for clarifying the presence of an ischaemic zone is proposed

    MO-ParamILS: A Multi-objective Automatic Algorithm Configuration Framework

    International audienceAutomated algorithm configuration procedures play an increasingly important role in the development and application of algorithms for a wide range of computationally challenging problems. Until very recently, these configuration procedures were limited to optimising a single performance objective, such as the running time or solution quality achieved by the algorithm being configured. However, in many applications there is more than one performance objective of interest. This gives rise to the multi-objective automatic algorithm configuration problem, which involves finding a Pareto set of configurations of a given target algorithm that characterises trade-offs between multiple performance objectives. In this work, we introduce MO-ParamILS, a multi-objective extension of the state-of-the-art single-objective algorithm configuration framework ParamILS, and demonstrate that it produces good results on several challenging bi-objective algorithm configuration scenarios compared to a base-line obtained from using a state-of-the-art single-objective algorithm configurator

    Solving efficiently complex problems using metaheuristics, and in particular local searches, requires incorporating knowledge about the problem to solve. In this paper, the permutation flowshop problem is studied. It is well known that in such problems, several solutions may have the same fitness value. As this neutrality property is an important one, it should be taken into account during the design of optimization methods.     The Life of a Professor: Stress and Coping

    The life of a professor is a balancing act, both professionally and personally. Professors must weigh the demands of research, publishing, teaching, and service with the requirements of their personal responsibilities. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore the role of stress on the work-life balance of a professor. This study was conducted by an interdisciplinary research team and included participants from a wide-range of academic fields. A mixed-methods approach, utilizing an electronic survey composed of demographic questions, Likert-scale responses, and open-ended questions, yielded data related to the benefits and challenges of being a professor from 31 states in the United States as well as from other countries. Structured interviews were then conducted to reveal the coping methods of the participants. In addition, this article incorporated embedded media in the form of audio sound bites and animated video, which provided the ‘voice’ of the faculty. The triangulated data revealed that lack of supports, both social and institutional, significantly increased the stress experienced by professors. Mechanisms for coping with stress that could be utilized by individual professors as well as institutional stress management strategies were discussed

    Interfacial Origin of the Magnetisation Suppression of Thin Film Yttrium Iron Garnet

    Yttrium iron garnet has a very high Verdet constant, is transparent in the infrared and is an insulating ferrimagnet leading to its use in optical and magneto-optical applications. Its high Q-factor has been exploited to make resonators and filters in microwave devices, but it also has the lowest magnetic damping of any known material. In this article we describe the structural and magnetic properties of single crystal thin-film YIG where the temperature dependence of the magnetisation reveals a decrease in the low temperature region. In order to understand this complex material we bring a large number of structural and magnetic techniques to bear on the same samples. Through a comprehensive analysis we show that at the substrate -YIG interface, an interdiffusion zone of only 4 - 6nm exists. Due to the interdiffusion of Y from the YIG and Gd from the substrate, an addition magnetic layer is formed at the interface whose properties are crucially important in samples with a thickness of YIG less than 200nm

The methyl C atom of the ethanol solvent mol­ecule is disordered over two positions with occupancies of 0.626 (13) and 0.374 (13), respectively. The cocrystallized ethanol mol­ecule is hydrogen bonded to one of the hydroxamate O atoms. O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O inter­actions generate infinite three-dimensional networks along [100], [010] and [001]

    Thermally induced magnetization dynamics of optically excited YIG/Cu/Ni81Fe19 trilayers

Available from American Physical Society via the DOI in this record.The response of Y3Fe5O12/Cu/Ni81Fe19 trilayer structures to excitation by a femtosecond laser pulse has been studied in optical pump-probe experiments and compared with the response of Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) and Ni81Fe19 reference samples. The optical pump induces a partial demagnetization of the Ni81Fe19, a large thermal gradient within the YIG, and temperature differences across the interfaces within the sample stack. When a moderate magnetic field is applied close to normal to the sample plane, so as to quasialign the YIG magnetization with the field and cant the Ni81Fe19 magnetization from the plane, ultrafast demagnetization initiates precession of the Ni81Fe19 magnetization. The transient temperature profile within the samples has been modeled using a one-dimensional finite-element computational model of heat conduction, while the magnetization dynamics are well described by a macrospin solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The precessional response of the Ni81Fe19 layers within the trilayers and the Ni81Fe19 reference sample are very similar for pump fluences of up to 1.5 mJ/cm2, beyond which irreversible changes to the magnetic properties of the films are observed. These results suggest that the spin Seebeck effect is ineffective in modifying the precessional dynamics of the present YIG/Cu/Ni81Fe19 samples when subject to ultrafast optical excitation.The authors gratefully acknowledge financial support from Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Grant No. EP/J018767/1 and an EPSRC CASE award with Dr. D.     Automatic Design of Multi-Objective Local Search Algorithms: Case Study on a bi-objective Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem

    International audienceMulti-objective local search (MOLS) algorithms are efficient metaheuristics, which improve a set of solutions by using their neighbourhood to iteratively find better and better solutions. MOLS algorithms are versatile algorithms with many available strategies, first to select the solutions to explore, then to explore them, and finally to update the archive using some of the visited neighbours. In this paper, we propose a new generalisation of MOLS algorithms incorporating new recent ideas and algorithms. To be able to instantiate the many MOLS algorithms of the literature, our generalisation exposes numerous numerical and categorical parameters, raising the possibility of being automatically designed by an automatic algorithm configuration (AAC) mechanism. We investigate the worth of such an automatic design of MOLS algorithms using MO-ParamILS, a multi-objective AAC configurator, on the permutation flowshop scheduling problem, and demonstrate its worth against a traditional manual design

    Coxiella burnetii dormancy in a fatal tenyear multisystem dysfunctional illness: case report

    In a previous study of a Q fever outbreak in Birmingham, our group identified a non-infective complex of Coxiella burnetii (C.b.) antigens able to survive in the host and provoked aberrant humoral and cell-mediated immunity responses. The study led to recognition of a possible pathogenic link between C.b. infection and subsequent long-term post Q fever fatigue syndrome (QFS). This report presents an unusually severe case of C.b. antigen and DNA detection in post-mortem specimens from a patient with QFS.We report a 19-year old female patient who became ill with an acute unexplained febrile encephalitis-like illness, followed by increasingly severe multisystem dysfunction and death 10 years later. During life, extensive clinical and laboratory investigations from different disciplinary stand points failed to deliver a definitive identification of a cause. Given the history of susceptibility to infection from birth, acute fever and the diagnosis of "post viral syndrome", tests for infective agents were done starting with C.b. and Legionella pneumophila. The patient had previously visited farms a number of times. Comprehensive neuropathological assessment at the time of autopsy had not revealed gross or microscopic abnormalities. The aim was to extend detailed studies with the post-mortem samples and identify possible factors driving severe disturbance of homeostasis and organ dysfunction exhibited by the course of the patient's ten-year illness. Immunohistochemistry for C.b. antigen and PCR for DNA were tested on paraffin embedded blocks of autopsy tissues from brain, spleen, liver, lymph nodes (LN), bone marrow (BM), heart and lung. Standard H&E staining of brain sections was unrevealing. Immuno-staining analysis for astrocyte cytoskeleton proteins using glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) antibodies showed a reactive morphology. Coxiella antigens were demonstrated in GFAP immuno-positive grey and white matter astrocytes, spleen, liver, heart, BM and LN. PCR analysis (COM1/IS1111 genes) confirmed the presence of C.b. DNA in heart, lung, spleen, liver & LN, but not in brain or BM.The study revealed the persistence of C. b. cell components in various organs, including astrocytes of the brain, in a post-infection QFS. The possible mechanisms and molecular adaptations for this alternative C.b. life style are discussed.Olga A.     Modeling genomic diversity and tumor dependency in malignant melanoma

    The classification of human tumors based on molecular criteria offers tremendous clinical potential; however, discerning critical and "druggable" effectors on a large scale will also require robust experimental models reflective of tumor genomic diversity. Here, we describe a comprehensive genomic analysis of 101 melanoma short-term cultures and cell lines. Using an analytic approach designed to enrich for putative "driver" events, we show that cultured melanoma cells encompass the spectrum of significant genomic alterations present in primary tumors. When annotated according to these lesions, melanomas cluster into subgroups suggestive of distinct oncogenic mechanisms. Integrating gene expression data suggests novel candidate effector genes linked to recurrent copy gains and losses, including both phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN)-dependent and PTEN-independent tumor suppressor mechanisms associated with chromosome 10 deletions. Finally, sample-matched pharmacologic data show that FGFR1 mutations and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation may modulate sensitivity to mitogen-activated protein kinase/ERK kinase inhibitors. Genetically defined cell culture collections therefore offer a rich framework for systematic functional studies in melanoma and other tumors
